As Minnesota’s cannabis and smoke-free housing landscape evolves, property managers,
owners, and residents have questions about how to maintain a healthy living environment.
Live Smoke Free, in partnership with Dakota County Public Health and Minneapolis Health
Department, have designed two new resources to help navigate these questions:
Resource 1: Cannabis and Multi-Unit Housing: A Guide for Minnesota Property Managers and
Owners
For those managing multi-unit housing, this resource clarifies rights and responsibilities under
Minnesota law. While smoking and vaping adult-use (non-medical) cannabis is prohibited in
multi-unit housing buildings, property managers have the legal authority to implement 100%
smoke-free policies that go beyond state law. This can include prohibiting both adult-use and
medical cannabis smoking/vaping in lease agreements.
Resource 2: Cannabis and Multi-Unit Housing: A Guide for Minnesota Residents
Everyone deserves a smoke-free home. This resource outlines tangible steps for residents who
are exposed to secondhand cannabis smoke to encourage property managers and/or owners to
adopt, enhance or enforce a smoke-free policy.

Smoke Free’s cannabis webpage.
This activity is made possible by a grant from the Cannabis & Substance Use Prevention program of the Minnesota Department of Health’s Health Improvement Bureau.
