Understanding smoke-free policies can be complex, especially when navigating the layers of federal, state and local regulations. To help simplify this process, Live Smoke Free in partnership with Hennepin County Public Health and the Public Health Law Center, has developed a new resource that provides a clear and organized overview of Minnesota state and federal smoke-free housing laws.

What Does This Resource Cover?

This resource categorizes smoke-free housing requirements by housing type making it easy to see where smoke-free laws apply and where there may be gaps. Along the left-hand side, the resource lists the substances covered (such as tobacco, cannabis, and e-cigarettes), providing a quick reference to understand which rules apply to different types of housing.

Why Is This Important?

Having a comprehensive resource like this can serve multiple purposes:

  • Understanding the Law – Renters, property managers, and housing professionals can easily determine where smoke-free policies are already in place.
  • Identifying Gaps – By highlighting where protections exist and where they don’t, this resource helps inform efforts to advocate for stronger, more comprehensive policies.
  • Effective Communication –  Whether you’re a property manager, decision maker, renter, or local public health agency, this tool can help explain why smoke-free housing policies matter and where they apply.

Who Can Benefit?

This resource is valuable for anyone involved in housing and public health, including:

  • Renters looking to understand their rights and protections.
  • Property managers and owners seeking to comply with existing laws or consider stringer smoke-free policies.
  • Advocates and policymakers working to close gaps and strengthen protections for residents.

As smoking and vaping laws continue to evolve, having a clear, accessible resource to smoke-free housing policies is essential for creating healthier living environments across Minnesota. Stay tuned for more updates and resources as we continue working toward smoke-free housing for all!!
