Our mission is to promote and maintain successful smoke-free housing opportunities throughout Minnesota, the United States, and across the housing spectrum. We believe that everyone deserves the right to a safe, clean, healthy, and SMOKE-FREE home. We received our first funding to work on this issue in Minnesota in 2007. Thanks to work by LSF and our partners, smoke-free housing opportunities have since seen an 8,000% increase throughout Minnesota! In fact, the 2018 Minnesota Adult Tobacco Survey (MATs) showed that nonsmoking Minnesota adult exposure to secondhand smoke in a multi-unit home is now down to approximately 15% within the past 7 days.

The trend has taken off nationally as well. Tens of thousands of apartments and condos have voluntarily adopted smoke-free policies, and there are a number of cities and counties that now require smoke-free housing protections at the municipal or county level. Starting in July 2018, all public housing nationwide funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development went smoke free.

Despite these excellent advances toward clean indoor air, significant disparities still exist.  In Minnesota, within any given week, secondhand smoke exposure is prevalent in the homes of 66,000+ kids. Exposure also increases for seniors, individuals who earn less, and people of color. These trends parallel health equity disparities at the national level as well. It is our goal that this new website will give you the tools and resources you need to promote clean, smoke-free air in your building. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like additional support or assistance. Thank you for visiting our website. Here’s to clean and healthy air for all!
