Program Description / Services
The MDH Tobacco Prevention and Control Unit (TPC) awards $3.2 million in state grant funds to organizations, tribal governments and urban American Indian organizations through the Tobacco-Free Communities and American Indian grant programs. One of the grant focus areas is smoke-free multi-unit housing or housing. There are 6 Tobacco-Free Communities grantees working on smoke-free housing. The MDH Office of Statewide Health Improvement Initiatives (OSHII) provides state grant funds to 52 Community Health Boards and 9 Tribal Governments and two urban American Indian organizations under the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP). All SHIP grantees are required to work on smoke-free housing efforts on the local level. MDH provides funding to the Association of Non-Smokers-Minnesota’s Live Smoke Free Program, the American Lung Association of Minnesota and the Public Health Law Center to provide technical assistance to MDH grantees working on smoke-free multi-unit housing and smoke-free housing.
MDH is working on an evaluation of local smoke-free housing work. For this evaluation, MDH and local public health have recruited rental properties that are in the process of passing smoke-free housing policies. Residents of these properties will be surveyed one month prior to, and six months after, implementation of the smoke-free housing policy in their building. Data from these surveys will allow us to examine changes in cigarette use, exposure to secondhand smoke, and quit attempts from pre- to post-policy implementation.
